Mardi Gras
Graftobian’s Mardi Gras Kit
Theatrical Note: As you are laying out your make-up as suggested above, be sure you have all of the items listed on the front label panel under “Complete Kit Contains.” Use of optional suggested items will be discussed below.
Glitter Stack Contains: 6 Colors, Polyester Mylar Glitter Dust–Keep out of eyes!
Before You Start: Your make-up should be applied in a clean, well lit area. Give yourself plenty of room, and arrange your materials neatly in front of you. If you are doing the make-up on yourself, make sure you have an amply sized, well lit mirror. Wear old clothes— making up can get messy and Latex is virtually impossible to get out of clothing, hair and carpet! Make-up should always be applied to clean skin, so wash your hands and face and you are ready to begin.
Time Needed: This will require 10 minutes for the leg, 10 minutes for the cheek heart, 15 minutes for the multicolored floral shoulder design, and 45-60 minutes for the large Fantasy/Mardi Gras facial design.
Please Note: Latex allergies affect a small but significant percentage of people. Since this kit deals primarily with techniques using latex as a glitter adhesive, those with such allergies should refrain from use of the Latex portion of this kit. If you have any known allergies to any of the listed ingredients of any of the other components of this kit, do not use that component. Select a shade or item from your dealer’s stock that will give you a similar effect or serve a similar purpose but does not contain the ingredient to which you react. If any of the products contained in this kit cause discomfort, remove as instructed and discontinue use.
Skin: Apply latex and glitter to clean, dry and hairless skin. If you apply the latex to hair, you will experience discomfort upon removal (much like the feeling of pulling off a bandage). Apply face powder to the area to receive the design and to the surrounding skin to ensure that the skin is fully dry and will not attract glitter. You’ll understand why in a minute.
Applying the Fantasy Make-Up: The Mardi Gras Face: Eye Lining Technique:
For practice, draw a simple design on your upper arm near the shoulder using the brush cap included with the Colored Liquid Latex. Try to paint evenly without heavy drips of latex in any one area.
Allow the latex to dry completely. You will know when the design is completely dry once the greyish color of the latex has turned to Jet Black.
Note: We have included Black Liquid Latex with the complete kit due to the versatility of that color behind a wide variety of colors of powdered glitter. You’ll find that all of the glitter colors included in the kit will “pop” off of the Black except for the opalescent glitter. In the case of the opalescent, you will note that it changes to a mother of pearl color when applied over the black latex. This is because opalescent, pink, yellow and some other of our glitters are transparent and allow the latex color to show through the glitter. The gold, red, green, purple, fuchsia, silver, blue and orange are all aluminum mylar flake glitters (a layer of mirror-like aluminum is sandwiched between the colored mylar sheets creating total reflectivity and a striking effect when pressed into freshly dried black liquid latex. Try our colored liquid latexes and powdered glitter shades, all sold separately, to achieve a truly impressive palette of fantasy glitter effects.
Figure B: Apply glitter by pinches or by the brush full. You’ll note that in the image, we start at the bottom of the design and work our way up. If you start at the top, any glitter that falls onto latex below will be stuck for good. Once the glitter is covering all of the latex, press the latex in gently with your fingertip before proceeding.
Figure C: Whisk away extra powdered glitter using a soft powder brush (not included) or similar instrument. As long as all the surrounding skin is dry, the excess powdered glitter will just fall away. Your design should be smooth to the touch and durable. If you have any “clumpy” areas, you probably did not allow that area to fully dry before pressing in the glitter.
Figure 1: Powder the face and neck as discussed above. Use the Silver Luster™ pencil to outline the design you’ll be filling in with the liquid latex. Using the Luster applicator’s sponge tip or your fingertip, apply the Fuchsia Fire Luster™ Creme to the eye area including the eyebrows (Important: don’t apply the latex to the eyebrows).
Apply Fuchsia Fire Luster™ Powder to the eye area using the brush end of the Luster applicator and whisk away excess. Apply face powder to the outline before proceeding.
Figure 2: Fill in the design with black latex being careful not to create heavy, drippy areas which will take a very long time to dry.
Figure 3: Three colors have been applied to this design: purple, fuchsia and green. The lowest lobe was colored first and the artist worked up the face. She sprinkled the purple around the outside of the design, the fuchsia just inside that and the green into the center. She worked carefully and deliberately, pressing the glitter into the latex once the sprinkling was complete.
Figure 4: Additional detailing is painted on in black latex both outside the design and on top of the existing colors in preparation for the addition of gold glitter to the design.
Allow the latex to dry completely before pressing the gold glitter into place as before, with the excess just brushed away. Finally, Fuchsia Fire lipstick is applied to the lips.
Figure 5: In this figure, the eyes have been lined with a black eye Liner (not included), the lips have been augmented with some Lavender Lights Luster™ Powder (not included) and the hair has been sprayed with some green and gold, Festival® Glitter Spray (not included).
Figure 6: Add some costuming, some feathers and some Mardi Gras beads and you’re ready for Bourbon Street!
Figure X: Magic Set™ Mixing and Lining Liquid can be mixed with Cosmetic Powdered Metals (sold separately) such as silver and gold to create stunning statue effects. Here we show the lining technique. Mix a few drops of the Magic Set™ in the palm of your hand with equal portions of your Fuchsia Fire Luster™ Powder.
Figure Y: Paint the Fuchsia liner onto the eyelid or where ever you wish to create this stunning, liquid Luster effect.
Removal: Our makeup can be removed with make-up remover or Cold Cream Makeup Remover (not included). The Latex pulls off with ease. Once all make-up is carefully removed, gently wash with soap and water.
